The annual GDP of Republika Srpska in 2007 was around €3.7 billion which amounts to an annual growth rate of 6.5%. In 2008 GDP was expected to grow even faster, at 7.2%, but this did not take into account the global financial situation at the end of the year so this figure will most likely be revised.
Public expenditure by the government of Republika Srpska is less than 40% of GDP and in the last few years a series of privatisations and foreign direct investment projects have raised over €1 billion. The largest of these was the privatization of Telekom Srpska, the former state-owned telecommunications operator which was sold for €646 million. Of these funds 53% is to be used in investment programmes and 47%, for social and economic programmes.
