Republika Srpska is one of the two multiethnic entities which are part of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other entity is the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Republika Srpska was declared on January 9th, 1992 and was verified as a state entity in the Dayton Peace Agreements which were signed at the Peace Treaty in Paris on December 14th 1995 which had put an end to a three and a half year long war (1992-1995) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The largest city of Republika Srpska is Banja Luka, which, with its 250,000 inhabitants, represents the administrative, economic, and cultural capital of Republika Srpska.
Republika Srpska covers an area of 25,053 square kilometres, or 49% of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to unofficial estimates from 2004, it has a population of approximately 1.4 million.
Republika Srpska is situated at a contact point of the two large natural-geographic and socio-economic regional units and represents a connection between Western Europe and the Central Balkans.
Each entity that makes up Bosnia and Herzegovina has its own President, government (headed by a Prime Ministers) as well as parliament. The current President of Republika Srpska is Mr Rajko Kuzmanovic; the government of Republika Srpska is currently led by Mr Milorad Dodik, and the Chairman of the National Assembly (or Parliament) is Mr Igor Radojicic.
